Foreign accent syndrome is a neurological disorder, extremely rare, when a person begins to speak in their own language with a foreign accent, and sometimes even in a completely different language that they did not know before, which is why this syndrome is sometimes also called “foreign language syndrome”.
The disorder was first recorded by the French neurologist Pierre Marie in 1907, when his patient suddenly developed an Alsatian accent after a stroke. At the moment, not many studies have been conducted on this topic, for which the mystery of this syndrome could be at least a little more open. But often the causes of such cases were head injuries, brain tumors and mental illness.
One of the most famous cases, and, in fact, ironic on the part of fate, occurred in 1941 in Norway, with a girl named Astrid: during the bombing, a bomb explosion hit her, but after she woke up, she spoke in a distinct German accent, and surprised everyone around her.
Another well-known case happened on the football field with 16-year-old goalkeeper Ruben Nsem, when he accidentally got hit by someone’s foot and fell into a coma for three days. After he woke up, he suddenly began to speak Spanish, which he did not know at all earlier. Only in time, when his health began to recover and he could remember English again, Spanish started to gradually disappear not only from his speech, but also from his brain.
Despite the fact that we still do not know much about this phenomenon, but at least this is one of the cases that prove incredible things and at the same time the possibilities hidden in our subconscious and brain. Languages, in particular, are not a wall that can not be climbed, but a small barrier that any of you will be able to break with effort and the right approach.
